Intermitant problem logging onto NT Dm

By tzmueller ·
I have a strange problem. we are running a winNT 4 domain and just recently we encounter a problem when trying to logon onto the domain with either a Windows 2000 or NT 4 computer.

We are using full roaming profiles and when I try to logon to thedomain with a account I sometimes (and not all the time) get "can not copy the file: whatever"... "bad network connection" but it only happens on some computers and not all and not all the time either.

Our roaming profiles have been running fine for 2 years and no problems and this started happening about 3 days ago. Sometime they can get their roaming profiles and sometimes they can't (users). I have checked all the hubs and connections and even if they can't logon they still can connect towhere their roaming profile is stored and are able to browse the directory properly.

Any ideas at all? I am at a total loss!

Intermitant problem logging onto NT Dm

I agree that this is a puzzling picture and I have not seen one exactly like it. But I do have a sense it is a network problem as opposed to a permissions or configuration problem on the server.

However, I did recently see a situation where a network got really bizarre, seemingly all of a sudden. When we finally traced down the cause, the Catalyst5000 switches were running out of memory and the problem was finally solved by a RAM upgrade and a code upgrade to eliminate a known memory leak. Like yours, this system had been stable for about two years before the problem cropped up but when we looked at the history, it became apparent that the problem had been caused by pushing higher and higher speeds (both CPU and network) to the desktop without upgrading the infrastructure where it all converged. Even though those upgrades occurred incrementally over the two-year period, the problem seemed to hit suddenly and we still can't identify one particular thing that pushed it over the edge.

Your best bet is going to be to do some packet captures and see what is actually happening on your network and run some Performance Monitor logs on the server where the roaming profiles are stored and see if anything looks askew.

One otherquestion that comes to mind is "does this only happen with roaming profiles?" What happens during other file transfers when the file transferred is about the size of a profile?

I am going to go under the assumption that it is not a hardware related issue because you did not mention that the are any further problems after being logged on. It is probable that you may be seeing the PDC authenticate and provide logon script for some users and the BDC(s) for other users.
Verify that your PDCs and BDCs are replicating and are both providing the same profiles and/or logon scripts.
