Intermitent login, internet,and E-mail

By richnosal ·
Having problems with intermitent logins, e-mail, internet access, and printing. Some users can log onto the network some cannot and it changes. The same goes for internet access, E-mail and printing. Starting to belive im losing some peice of hardware on the network possibly a hub, switch and/or router. Is there anyway to test to see which piece of hardware it is. Maybe a freeware or shareware program to map or test hardware connections? ANy help would be most appreaciated.

What is your network layout?

Are all your users in a single physical building, or scattered across wan links?

Are all your users on a single subnet, or divided?

Are you using Vlan's or port trunking?

Does the problem affect all, or some users in each group?

What time of day does the disruption occur? Does it happen at the same time, ie 9am when everyone shows up for work and logs in, or is it scattered around the clock?

Without some specifics, its kinda hard to pin down an intermittent problem.

You should get more detailed information, ie) what happens when users try to log in and cannot - is there a message? What messages do you see when they have trouble with e-mail and printing? Are they the same "type" of message or do you have multiple problems going on? If they were logged in and had the problem when they were printing check to see if you still can see the rest of the network in the network neighborhood (or have you lost your connection). If you have a map of your network cabling, routers, hubs, etc. , document which users are having problems and see if they are on a segment together which might narrow down things. You have to start getting details which help narrow the focus of what could be the problem. Have you made any network changes (hardware or software)recently that might be causing the problem? (if you haven't been documenting those changes you should) You don't have enough information as it is.
