Intermittant DNS error IE5.5 & WIN2K Pro

By tmanting ·
The problem is I?m getting a ?Cannot find server or DNS Error? in IE 5.5 after a few hours using Windows 2000 professional when attempting to surf our Intranet. Internet sites are not affected. After I reboot, the problem goes away for a while.
Our Intranet uses a name structure of server.site.organization.org and DNS and WINS is running on one of our NT servers for the entire organization. I put a CNAME record in DNS pointing to the server in question and when I use the alias rather than the FQDN WIN2K Pro will browse to the server reliably!
Our network consists of several NT4 servers, a dozen or so NT4.0 workstations and about 60 Win9X PCs and this is the only machine I have this problem with. This leads me to believe this is a problem with WIN2K Pro.
I?ve scoured the Microsoft knowledgebase to no avail. (I?m aware that Win9x had a similar problem that Microsoft has a fix for.) Can anybody help?

Intermittant DNS error IE5.5 & WIN2K Pro

I had a similiar problem with Win2k Pro on my network and had a problem with my stand alone machine connecting to the internet. Even though it is undocumented anywhere in Technet, SP1 solved the problem on both machines. Hope this helps.

This was the first thing I tried. The actual solution (which another member suggested) was to to disable the DNS client service!

I am also trying to find a solution to intermittant disconnection from my ISP. While actively surfing the internet, my PC (Win2000 connected to ISP via DSL and Proxy Server) freeze and if I immediatly attempt to PING my ISP's address, I get a timeout. If I ping out from another PC (WinNT or Win98)on the LAN, it has no trouble pinging out. I can ping any PC on the LAN, including the proxy server. After a few minutes, the problem resolves itself. ???

This doesn't sound anything like the issue I brought up, but thanks anyway. The actual solution (which another member suggested) was to to disable the DNS client service!
