Intermittent mouse/keyboard recognition

By KevinV ·
I am running Windows XP and am having the following problem.

Every other time I boot up the system, my mouse (PS/2 connector), and the keyboard will not work. The mouse doesn't show up in device manager, but the keyboard does. There are no apparrant conflicts with the keyboard, it just
doesn't work. Each time, I have to plug in a USB mouse, and reboot the machine for it to recognize the PS/2 mouse, and for the keyboard to work.

Does anyone know what the conflict might be, and how to resolve it?

My first thought is a bad PS/2 port.

Has either the mouse or keyboard been "hot-plugged"?

The PS/2 port is NOT plug and play like USB.

Plugging and unplugging PS/2 devices while a PC is on can damage both the device and the PS/2 port electronics on the PC.

If the port is damaged, you have 2 options:

Use USB devices

Replace the motherboard.

You didnt say what brand this computer is, But the dell machines have this problem, and needed a bios update. other probs may include failure to recognize other disk drives that are being replaced.

I had an old compact that did the same thing - want I ended up doing is putting in a com port card and that took care of the problem, i guess the on board ports got messed up or damaged.
