Intermittent NT login

By jfp51 ·
Hello,

I am having this problem with some NT workstations at a client site. Sometimes, they will not be able to login to the domain. I believe it has something to do with the fact that they are on a different network than the WINS servers, and that the route to the WINS servers is too long. Since they are in M-Node resoltuion, they then try to broadcast and since there are no DC's on their segment, login fails.

The workstations are on 172.x.x.x, and the WINS servers are on 159.x.x.x. There are approximately 10 BDC'S spread out all over Paris so I can't tell you exactly what the address' are.

My solutions are:

1. Put WINS server on 172.x.x.x
2. Put BDC on 172.x.x.x segment

Is there any other maybe simpler way to solve this problem that I may have overlooked? Namely route configuration on the routers between these networks? Short of allowing broadcasts through (not going to happen), what else can I look at and suggest?

Thanks,
JF Prieur

The intermittent login problem is due to the fact that your client workstation & PDC are not talkijg to each other. On a domain, only the PDC authenticates login.
Since your client systems are on a remote location, I suggest you use a (Router VPN)router-to-router tunnel (we do it for systems from New Delhi, INDIA to Louseville, USA).

Are you sure that only the PDC authenticates login? I believe that BDC's can authenticate logins as well. Password changes on the other hand are done on the PDC only.

Then again I maybe wrong.

Router VPN not feasible here, thanks for the help though

You have an overall network topology problem. Without knowing your exact configuration it would be impossible to recommend. I would preform a "tracert" to the suspected clients to the PDC/BDC servers to determine their routes. You will most likely find that your routes are not properly defined.

Yep, I guess that we will have to declare the routes to ALL the PDC/BDC'S in order to solve the problem.

Thanks
