Intermittent printer problem

By web10 ·
I've tried allsorts to get to the bottom of this intermittent printer problem, but still no luck, can anybody help?!

I have an hp deskjet 720C (parallel port) connected to a W98SE PC. Has been working fine for ages. Recently got "Can't communicate with printer" errors, and no print or partial print coming out. I've tried a new printer cable - no luck. The printer works fine on another PC. I tried a different printer on the problem PC - sometimes works, sometimes not. Tried reinstalling the LPT driver files (vcomm.vxd, lpt.vxd). Tried running the dos tool from the W98 CD to check the parallel port - no errors detected.

Thinking that the port was the problem, got a USB-to-parallel cable (assigned to LPT2) to run the printer from. Worked ok at first, but now doesn't.

Throughout all of this troubleshooting, I've had the printer suddenly print ok and do so for days before failing again.

Am I looking at a hardware failure in the parallel port or the motherboard, or can anyone suggest another line of attack?

Any help appreciated!

It seems to be a software problem rather than hardware, you should try completely uninstalling the printer from Device Manager than refresh, I found a driver that is said to work for that printer under most or all windows OS's its 5MB:

http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=10092

DriverGuide gives the same username and password to everyone, Drivers:All

Try that and get back to me,

Disconnect the printer uninstall the driver currently installed. Then reinstall the driver.

Here is the link to the Driver at support.hp.com:

If this does not work consider that the intermitant nature of the problem may be due to the way that the application being used is addressing the printer.
The 710, 712, and 720 deskjets use a diferent language from the bulk of HP's other printers which cause them to have issues when they are shared on a network or are printing from older applications. I have had to move 10 to 15 of these printers to different desks where the user was only printing from standard office applications and there was no printer shareing going on.

Have tried reinstalling printer driver, but still getting same problems. Sometimes one application (e.g. Word) won't print, but another will (e.g. IE). (PC isn't networked, other than dial-up internet connection.)
