Intermittent squeal from tower

By thecomputerguy74 ·
I have a PC that every once in a while will emit a prolonged squeal. I have been unable to determine exactly where it is coming from. I temporarily disconnected the PC speaker to determine whether that was it, but the squealing still occurs. There is no sound card or modem in the system, so I cannot determine what might be causing the problem. The system works fine otherwise, so it doesn't seem to be indicating a problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

There are 2 primary suspects;

Cooling fans.
Drives.

Inspect the cooling fans, and clean out the dust that has built up on them and the CPU heatsink.

With power off, spin the fan blades by hand. They should spin freely and smoothly.
Any fan that is hard to spin, or feels like it has loose bearings should be replaced before it fails and causes further problems.

If it is a drive, this is an indication that the drive is near a failure. Back-up and replace the drive.

It sounds like a bearing squeal from one of the fans inside the computer. Check the main cooling fan and also if there is a fan located on the CPU. It is very common for the oil light bearings to squeal, especially when you first turn on the computer, generally when they heat up (5 to 30 minutes) the squealing will stop.

The easiest way to correct the problem is replace the fan, but if you are ambitious, and have the tools you can take the fan apart and service it. Good luck!

Could also be the internal speaker. If you dont mind not hearing post beeps, you can unplug it.
