I am currently working with a customer who is having problems accessing their internet domain.com because of the local domain using the same domain.com naming convention.
To clarify…
On the internet they are domain.org with an alias of domain.com. The domain.com has been used throughout their website and email by the webmaster as if it were the true domain name.
Internally, there are 3 domains (ie., LAN1.domain.com, LAN2.domain.com and LAN3.domain.com). All are running versions of Windows 2000 Server.
The problem is that any user trying to access the website or or email from an internal location using the .com rather than .org faces a rejection from DNS. Away from the internal LAN there is no problem. What I need to do is decide how best to either (1) change the internal domain.com without destroying servers on LAN1, LAN2 and LAN3; or (2) find a method of redirection to route www.domain.com requests away from the LANs.
So far I cannot see any valid way to use WINS or LMHosts to accomplish a redirect. I have also seen a reference to removal of the domain.com root indicator in the internal DNS but no details on how to accomplish this.
