Not with Windows 2000, but you can use a SMTP relay with Windows 2003. It only offers to forward and recieve SMTP traffic, so do not expect it to be a heavy duty mail server.

I would advise you to look at one of the low cost mail servers being offered these days. If your clients want all the collaboration features, such as shared calendars, then you will need either Exchange or Notes.

Nearly any e-mail server can be configured as an "internal only" mail server.

Windows 2003 comes with basic SMTP & POP3 mail services; all you need to do in enalble them.

For Win2K, I've read good things about the *free* ArgoSoft mail server. Find it here:

However, if you don't mind investing a little $$$, Kerio mail server ( is an ecellent product that offers lots of benefits -- shared folders, calendaring, etc. It can also be configured for remote mail retreival, where it connects to the internet, and download mail from your user's ISP account(s) to the local e-mail account. For a network your size I think the price is around $700.00
