Internet Access

By amk ·
My company just got an ISDN line and will be giving some employees access to the Internet. The owners are concerned about abuse. Is there a way, on the admin side, of tracking each address accessed by each user? Is there software to do this? I know that I can check each PC's history and cookies but that is not a good solution. I need to be able to get the info thru the UNIX mail server. Please advise.

Thanks.

There is a product called WebSense (www.websense.com) that will let you track sites that individual users visit, filter sites based on content, and create logs that will provide you with a usage history. It's easy to set up and works on many different platforms.

There's several commercial programs available to monitor your users internet usage. Most of them is available as free trials as well. Try www.wingate.com or go to any big Tucows mirror and browse for network proxy software.

If you give the individual machines direct access to the internet through a router, then it becomes difficult to track them. The best solution is to set up a proxy server using software such as MS Proxy. The proxy software will then be able to logeach URL that is requested. This is the setup we have here.

I haven't tried the websense software mentioned in a previous post, but it looks like it can either work with a proxy server or act as a proxy server itself. It also allows for filtering of web content by category if you want to do more than just report on usage.

My company (a mid-size water utility) uses a product called WinProxy, by Ositis. This product has built-in features that may help you curb abuse with your ISDN connection. We use it to customize website filtering and user privileges, but it also offers such features as a built-in firewall and centralized anti-virus protection. It has helped to enforce my companies e-mail and Internet usage policies, while ensuring a stable LAN-based connection.

Check out their website at: http://www3.winproxy.com/index.asp

Hope this helps you,
Al Endozo
