Internet access to database

By ebartholom ·
I would like to provide access to a simple database on the internet. We have skill sets in Visual Basic and access 97 to draw from. What would be the best solution?

Access is a poor choice, it's pretty rough to setup the multiuser stuff based on a single user engine.

Frontpage 2000 has a wizard for read-only table access... pretty easy

For anything else, you're going to have to go to ASP or XML. SQL Server 2000 has a nice virtual directory option that makes it a good springboard into XML.

Your VB programmers can probably generate some class modules for you so you can make function calls from VBScript in HTML/ASP/VBSCRIPT.

There's also ADO.NET, which I haven't had a chance to play with, but might not be as steep a learning curve for your VB guys.

As long as you have a windows web server NT4 or 2000, it is quite easy through ASP, active server pages with vbscript. You can use dsn-less connections. You can also use the vb getrows function to quickly place the recordset into an array and release the database.

A simple connect and table display.
<%
Dim Connect, OnStu, Query
Set Connect = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
Connect.Open "j64"
Query = "Select * from Student ORDER BY HLast, First, CLast"
Set OnStu = Connect.Execute(Query)

Do until OnStu.EOF %>
<TR valign = "top" align="left">
<TD> <b><% Response.Write OnStu("HLast") %></b> </td>
<TD> <b><% Response.Write OnStu("First") %></b> </td>
<TD> <% Response.Write OnStu("CLast") %> </td>
<TD> <% Response.Write OnStu("City") %> </td>
<TD> <% Response.Write OnStu("State") %> </td>
</tr>

<% OnStu.MoveNext
loop %>
</table>
