There will always be companies that feed on peoples fears.

If you use a good virus scanner and firewall, and religiously keep them up to date, you have roughly the same amount of protection.

There are many things you can do to limit the chances of being the victim of identity theft and hacking.

Be very cautious about what and where you download software and data files.

Run a spy-ware checker.
(I use AdAware from www.lavasoft.de)

Don't store financial account numbers on a PC thatis connected to a network.

Set your browser security and privacy options to their highest levels.

Never leave the computer un-attended while connected to the internet.

I agree with TheChas. Whatever you don't want seen by others don't keep on your PC. As the website says, No system is 100% safe!

Try a router with a built in firewall like the Linksys router if you use a broadband connection. This way the IPaddress on your PC is not a public IP.
