Internet Bandwidth Sharing

By smainville ·
We are in an office sharing our 256k Frame Relay through a hub with other NT Servers in the building (4 in all) What we need is a reliable bandwidth management tool, or a method of piecing out the bandwidth to prioritize our users over the 4 other networks. Our router is shared through the network at the hub where all 5 networks have access. We give out one IP Address with each "outside" line connection.

Any help in managing these connections would be very much appreciated. We charge theoutside networks for this service, but its hard to "manage" or control how much they use.

Any way you cut it your looking a a bit of work. First I would ask what type of router you are using, I'd assume it be along the lines of a cisco 2501/11 and if it is your limited to what you can do at the router level. What would work tho is to setup your server as the main DHCP Server dishing out 1 ip to the other servers and allowing them to setup their own Subnet. Then install and configure MS proxy and utilize the "Load balancing" features that allow you to throtle different ip's or subs for certain throughput. This would actually benefit everyone 2 fold. 1 Increasing your security 2 Drastically increasing performance with Cacheing and Prefetch in Proxy 2.0 as well as solving your problem. You would need to setup the other 3 servers for DCHP to your proxy and then in turn they would dish it out to their clients. And again you could limit their utilization. Just curious, with the prices of DSL and all why would 4 offices be sharing a 256kb Frame does it burst to 1.5???
Good Skill
Mike

Yeah, what he said!
Or you could upgrade all servers to WIN2K Server and implement Active Directory which will allow you to control bandwidth and set prioritization on a user by user basis.

We're in NW Ontario, its very expensive at this point in time, no ISDN - our DSL connection is the only one in the area - its part of a pilot project with Bell Canada. The companies sharing the connection are not for profits, as the small computercompany in the building we were asked to source out the connection for everyone.
