    Internet Browsing Security

    Locked

    by kenm ·

I have been asked to look into monitoring the browsing activity of our network.
A NT network with MS Proxy server as the gateway. Now I can check the proxy logs to monitor browser “inappropreate” browsing, but is/are there any plug-ins, filters that can be added to the proxy server to:
1- monitor browsing for type of sites configured, and to send an alert.
2- Set up to give reports that can be configured to my needs.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Here are the plugins recommended by Microsoft.

You may want to check out I-Gear too.

Take a look at webspy. (www.webspy.com).. it’s pretty specific when it comes to proxy logs.

you can also look at webtrends (webtrends.com). it’s more generic, and can be used as a web log reader as well.

      Hope this helps.

We use WebSense. It integrates really well with MS Proxy and has a ton of features. Automatically block certain categories of sites, you can add sites, and it has some extensive monitoring and alerting tools.

It’s kind of pricy though dependingon how many users. We have over 10,000 users, so it may be much cheaper in your situation?

      Hope this helps.

I wrote a small Perl script that produces a detail user activity report. The script gives one HTML file with general info such as top users, activity per hour and so forth. A second file gives a list of every domain/IP each user went to and number of times each day. It is usefull to track questionable users and watch some history of top users.
You can find the scripts at http://www.firetower.com/bbrown/

I have used the following two software products with much success. They both can do what your asking for quite well.

      WebSense (www.websense.com)
      and
      SurfControl (www.surfcontrol.com)

Currently using WebSense. It was a breeze to set up. There are lots of reports to choose from and customize. You can set it up to automatically email you browsing reports. You can customize to add/remove URL’s, create user/group browsing policies, and much more….They have a free 30-day trial too.

Cyfin (www.cyfin.com) has a software package that just generates reports from the proxy logs and does not offer any site blocking. It might also be something you may be looking for.
