Internet connection sharing

By jam.on.toast ·
I am using Windows 2k on a machine connected to a USB ADSL line and use internet connection sharing to share the connection with a laptop running windows 98 over an ethernet LAN. This works well for normal internet tasks but falls over when, for example I want both machines to join the same on-line game. I guessed that the ADSL connection is using just one IP address which prevents the games from individually identifying the PC's. Am I on the right lines? And if so, is there a solution?

Cheers!

The same ip address should not be a problem as most companies only have one ip address across their fixed links but many people can connect. This comes down to proxy. Make sure your two machines have fixed ip's and not relying on dhcp. also some games check serial numbers i.e. diablo 2 and stop at least one client joining. download a free or share bit of proxy server software and this should work fine.

I am pretty sure that its the game and not the OS or ADSL that inst allowing you to join the same game. Each online game requires a serial number to be used. Obviously you cant join the same game with one serial key. Hope this helps.

The best way I have found to share an Internet connection is to not worry about a software solution. In today's world, a router is relatively inexpensive, very fast, and provides access to the Internet when just one computer is on. Linksys makes agreat router that can be used and has USB ports on it. It comes from the box pretty much already configured, and has excellent documentation. Here's the link if you would like to see it for yourself: <http://www.linksys.com/Products/product.asp?grid=23&prid=160>

Just make sure to remove any spaces. I hope that helps.
