Internet connection sharing device?

By bradq ·
I used to be able to connect two pc's to the Internet when I had a static ip address using a Cable/DSL router. After AT&T Excite went bankrupt they only allow you to use DHCP to get Internet access. Is there anyway to have more than one computer on the Internet in this scenario? Do they make a router that can be assigned a public ip address from a DHCP server at the ISP?

WinXP and Win98 SE have Internet Connection Sharing. You can have your machines share the connection following this page: http://www.helmig.com/j_helmig/icsw98se.htm

Is your Cable modem a network device?

If so, you should still be able to use a network hub/switch to share the cable connection.

If you decide to use ICS, remember that it should only be enabled on the computer with the connection. You will have problems if you enable it on the other computers.

Thsi is a new twist and best resolved by your ISP,
I have internet connection, with Windows XP and Win ME and it has ICS with no problem with the hook up,run setup from the host and apply the same setup with client
Follow the onscreen instructions and choose how the computers connect to the internet using a cable.

Hi,

Unfortunately you didn't tell us what kind of router you've got so here's a punt... A Linksys...

If it is, then the following tech guide will take you through a step by step setup procedure.
Even if its not a Linksys, the steps will be very similar and you may be able work work out what each step means for your model.

I'm assuming you don't have a cable modem with a router in it. With that setup, you'll need another NIC in the PC you plan on having the cable modem connected to and either a crossover cable to the 2nd PC or regular patches hooked to a hub and thenthe 2nd PC. At that point you can either you ICS or get a program like sygate or winproxy to share the connection between the two computers. I good site to look at doing this is at www.winproxy.com. Even if you don't use their software, they havegreat info on how to get the basics setup.

If you do get a router for your cable access, then all you should have to do is assign two internal use static IPs (192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 for example) and then NAT those two addresses to the address the modem pulls. This should be something that you only need to configure once and not everytime you pull an IP.

You might also want to call AT&T. They should be able to offer your two DHCP leases. Even though each machine isn't static, you'll still be able to pull two different ones.

Good luck to you

Mark
