I have a shared dial-up connection setup on a computer in my office. It’s an XP Pro machine, that has the modem’s connection shared through the ethernet card, with is connected directly to a wireless router. Various laptops and desktops connect to the LAN via the wireless router. In addition to using the XP machine to share the Internet connection, I’m also using it as a file repository and Terminal Server into it to run some applications remotely.
Question: Whenever I attempt to connect to the ‘server’ machine via Terminal Server or to a shared folder, it automatically dials into the ISP. I’m wondering if there are any settings that can prevent it from connecting to the ISP until I actually need an external Internet connection? It seems funny to me that I need to dail-up to pull files off a machine on my own internal LAN. I’d even be happy with a prompt asking me to confirm whether or not I wanted to dial-up.
