Dear All,
I am facing a weird situation thats driving me mad, hope someone will help!
I have two sets of machines (each set has two machines, two running win2k pro sp4 and other 2 running winxp pro sp2). I have two lan hubs that connect to a proxy server, and intend to share the internet connection (static ips) between machines running the same os, via an addon pci ethernet controller to the onboard controller. Such that the xp pro machine is an ics gateway for the other xp pro machine and win2k likewise.
I tried first with the xp pro machines and succeded. I enabled ICS letting the TCP/IP properties on the host unchanged (the addon ethernet controller got configured to IP Address 192.168.0.1 and Subnet 255.255.255.0), and let the guest stay on automatic IP and DNS.
IE was set to Detect LAN settings automatically and everything worked fine until a “smart alec” played with the guest machines IP and the Network Sharing wizard for a while, before setting it back to Automatic. Theres are now two Local Area Connections in the Network Connections window, guess thats because the wizard was run. Now the connection exists but I just cannot connect to the Internet on the guest machine. I tried configuring the guest machine to manual and could even ping the DNS of our proxy server, but no pages would load.
What could be the reason for this problem and how do I trouble shoot? Also with the addon pci ethernet controller, the local area network got number 3, contrary to the expected 2 even though the device manager shows only two ethernet controllers (one pci and one onboard). Could this be because of any another ethernet controller that might have been used earlier and later removed? How can their traces be removed, I guess some registry entries would need to be cleaned?
Can everything be fully reset and reconfigured, without ghost ethernet controllers? Will the same steps apply for win2k?
