Internet connection sharing W2K Prof.

By pca ·
I have a home network consisting of an 8-port Ethernet hub with 3 Windows 2000 Prof. pc's connected & 1 Win ME pc. I hope to soon have a network printer as well. I also have a cable modem connection via the uplink port on the hub.

I wish to shareout my internet connection to all the pc's, & have been told the only way to do this (without additional hardware eg routers or additional network cards) is to configure the one machine that can access the internet as a Windows 2000 server.

How do I do this? What do I need to do to accomplish his?

The simplest way to do this is to use a Cable Router.

The Router would connect to the cable modem and there would be a cable from the router to your present hub.

The router would supply DHCP services to assign IP addresses to the computers on the network.

If you want to use a Windows 2000 server you will have to add a network card in it to access the internet thru the cable modem and use the W2K server for the DHCP services to allow the other computers to access the internet.

Just adding a windows 2000 server to your present network will not allow what you want without adding some hardware.

Note that a cable router is a lot cheaper than a W2K server.

I found this useful - but in a way cost prohibitive. I was a bit concerned as to how my laptop could be interfaced: but thanks to the contributor.

See KB 307311 for complete install guide. It's really very simple and will work with most home networks.

You should use a broadband router for cable...Linksys makes a very good and affordable one.

Take a look at these links for all kinds of help and info on ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) including step by step setup guides:

Good luck! Hope this helps...

The http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/ website was fantastic! Far more helpful than the Microsoft site - many thanks for that! it's now on my list of favourites!
