Internet Dial-up with Win XP Pro

By abnet85-techrepublic ·
Upgraded from win2k pro to winxp pro. Using McAfee firewall and virusscan. After upgrade, modem dials out to ISP and logs onto their server.
Firewall blocks port scan attack (incoming traffic) but IE fails to find web page and Outlook Express cannot find mail server. Disableing firewall has no effect. TCP/IP and PPP seem to be correct. How can I force the Connection?

To get a better idea of the actual problem, first of all make sure you have your ISP's DNS server settings set in your TCP/IP Properties and that you do not have a proxy server set.

Next, try to ping an IP address from a DOS prompt(your ISP's primary DNS server should do). If this works, then try pinging a www address. If this fails then it is is most likely a DNS issue.

At the DOS prompt try:ipconfig /flushdns
You could also try restarting the DNS client (Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Services -> locate and restart DNS client.

Hope this information is of help to you.
