Internet Explorer- Back Button Disabled

By bbkell13 ·
I have a machine that is running on XP Pro. After installing JAVA, the back button is disabled on Internet Explorer. I have found a workaround, which is by opening the Microsoft Update in the start menu. If I surf the web using Internet Explorer by this method, then it works fine. Anyone got any input on how to fix this problem?

Try ruling out malware first. Java might just be a coincidence.

Try running some programs like Spybot, MS Anti-Spyware, etc. Then perhaps a AV scan and even HiJackThis.

Try using the backspace key instead of the IE Back Button. If that works then the problem is with the browser software, you could re-install IE but I would advise a move to Firefox.

This is ocurring on all of our new XP machines, which are all using the same ghost image. Internet Explorer functions properly until Java 1.5.0_06 is installed.
