Internet Explorer Homepage Hijacking
Lockedby ddvorpahl · about 16 years, 9 months ago
How do I stop my IE6 Homepage from being hijacked by http://www.sysprotectionpage.com/.
I get multiple warnings from various anti-virus software that my home page has changed to above:blank, do I want to keep it? I always say no, however, when I open IE I get the address above:blank and it switches to the above url or when I put my desired homepage in I shift to the above url. I checked my settings for homepage on the tab tools, internet, but it still reflects the desired homepage, but I can’t get there unless I go manually. I am not sure but there may be more hijacking on my pc. Can someone help?

Here is the recipe:
1) get yourself an anti-spyware tool- I use more than one – both Spybot search and Destroy and Ad Aware. Make sure you have the up to date definitions before the next step.
2) Turn off system restore.
3) Reboot into SAFE Mode
4) run the anti-spyware tools – twice – sometimes one virus/spyware masks another.
5) Reboot in standard mode and test IE.You can also look at what is running at startup by running msconfig from the run line – you can use it to turn all non MS apps off at startup and add them back one at a time, but I wouldnt’ do that until you’ve tried and failed with the anti-spyware program.
Hope that helps.
James

James RL, I have tried Search & Destroy, Ad-aware, No-Adaware, & at least 7 other programs. They all found many trojans, worms, etc. but still I have the problem. I will try, however, the turning off system restore. I did run the programs in safe mode, but to no avail. This is what happens when a person inadvertently turns off Norton Client Security. It allows junk through.

I like answer # 1 and would add;
1. Windows ME and earlier.
a. C:\windows\cookies and delete all that you do not want.
b. Empty your temporary internet folder2. Windows 2000 and XP
a. C:\windows (Win NT)\prefetch and delete all (this is basically the initial system load folder). NOTE: This will delete all saved site login information. In Spybot S&D enable permanent blocking then immunize after getting the latest definitions.

You may also want to turn off Windows Firewall, if it’s running, and install ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm, (http://tinyurl.com/cfhth,). It’s a good firewall and the price is right…!

This has been happening at the same time. I will d/load files using utorrent & then try to copy a cd using CloneDVD2 or 1click dvd copy 4.2 and do maybe 3 copies & then the machine reboots itself. I am running a 3.2 Gig Machine/Hyperthreading on with 1.5Gig of ram. Of course I am running Norton Client Security with Winpatrol Plus running to protect from virus/spyware. Any ideas? Both problems started about the same time. Hard to tell exactly when a problem occurs when another problem has most of the thought processes ticking.
