Internet Explorer not saving options

By ampl ·
I have several users with Windows 2000 SP2 (can't/won't install SP3) and Microsoft Office 2000 Professional. All users are using new Dell PCs.

When the user is in the Windows Explorer, and they right click on a file -> send to -> mail recipient, the email configuration wizard pops up to be set up for Outlook Express. They are using an exchange server, already set up through Outlook - this part works.

Looking at IE's option tab, it shows to use Outlook Express for all pertinent lines. So I change the lines to be Microsoft Outlook. Hit Apply/OK, get out, and try again...

Have to create a new Outlook Express...

OK, what's going on? Is there something that I'm obviously missing? Microsoft's site is useless

You are on the right track. You should make sure the option is changed under Internet Options>Programs tab. The main one to change in this case is Email. The others wont effect anything unless you are using that application type. As long as you are not hitting cancel or the x anywhere you should be ok.

It sounds like you are taking the right steps. You might check however under the different profiles. Check admin profile or perhaps if applicable other hardware profiles.

It sounds to me that the users just dont have rights to make changes. Perhaps there is a policy in effect keeping users from changing things. Might check gpedit.msc.

Just thought id throw in my 2 cents

Thanks, now I know that I'm not insane :)

You've reaffirmed that direction I was headed and am pretty sure at this point it's fixed.

They're listed as power users now on their machines - I'd hate to have to make them administrators (kind of defeats the point). I'm going to try making them administrators, change the settings, and then change them back to power users.

To add to the other answers, you might want to check group policy and each users profiles.
