Internet Explorer Process still running

By Aled ·
Happy New Year Everyone. I'm having a problem with my works Dell PC. (2.8 P4, 512 RAM, WinXP PRO, Networked, NAV). I discovered that after I close Internet Explorer, the process is left still running (approx 25,000k). I discovered this when my machine went slow, and wouldn't even open up IE. At the moment, I'm having to close IE, then [ctrl][Alt][Del] to Task Manger, and end the process from there (as many as incidents if IE, I've had running). I've checked for all the usual suspects, such as spyware, viruses, etc. Anybody know why this is happening, or more to the point, how to fix it, please

This solution may work for you:

Exit IE and Windows Explorer (iexplore.exe and explorer.exe, respectively, in Task Manager).
Use the following command from a command prompt to delete the file:

C>del "%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat"

Restart IE and Windows Explorer.

A good explanation of known Explorer issues is located here:

I tried that, but was unsuccessful after many attmpts, including disconnecting from the network (pulled the plug). I deleted index.dat from all user accounts (admin, etc). The only difficult one was from the 'localservice' account, which I had to delete from safemode - command prompt. still no success. Thanks for trying though, much appreciated

Found it!!!
I searched the sysinternals website for IE, this afternoon. Someone mentioned looking at the add ons, to see if there were any which were still referencing a website, after IE was closed down. I didn't hold out too much hope, but thought it's worth a try. I went through the list (intelligently)disabling 'likely candidates' one at a time. (I have a 'need to know why' drive, so I can use the info for future reference). It was the good ol' yahoo toolbar. How disappointing is that? (I so wanted it to be
Anyway, thanks are due to BFilmFan, who directed me to Sysinternals in the first place. If I can find a way, I'm gonna give you 100 points. You didn't directly give me the solution, but you helped me on my way. I'm well happy!!
