Internet Explorer...No page is displayed

By danielr ·
For WinXX There are 2 possible things that happen. One is a customer gets connected but is unable to view webpages in Internet Explorer but can view pages in other browsers. Two a customer gets connected and is unable to view webpages in any web browser. I am open to any suggestions to this problem.

Internet Explorer...No page is displayed

I resolved this for one of my customers.
Right Click on My computer. Choose Hardware devices, Choose Modem, and IF YOU SEE MORE THAN ONE, as I did then REMOVE THEM ALL.
Restart the computer and the correct modem should be found and it will all be OK. No more page not found

Thanks

The answer by Mr Robinson is one aspect and a good one, however I have had this problem , and one method to resolve it is to select the repair option under tools, or run System File checker to make sure that no dlls or drivers have lost their way ifnot resolved , or reinstall IE explorer . There is an issue with a text viewer in the new version of IE5.5 and some updates, but remember it is a collective issue , depending on what is installed on the machine as to how and when it malfunctions, try the fix file option , and then repair option, or simply reinstall it, but note what resolves it , no matter what you do to fix it , as it can and likely will return up the road at some point , an annoyance but once fixed it is minimized if it occurs again, research is being done to solve it completely.

There is another more mundane way to resolve it temporarily , and this sounds simple but it resolves an issue that temporaily makes the viewer unstable, defrag , yes that is all , simply defrag the system , I suspect it has something to do with the Web Bugs attached , not counting the web site viewed, I had this happen to me a few hours ago , and defragging resolved it for now. As I said before in the other narative, it's being researched as to how the instability is introduced , and it appearson the surface that the target site has a hand in the issue, hence the Web Bugs are suspect as they are on both the machine IE and the target site (The target site which effected me was TechRepublic). Considering the latter , many spyware services use the Web Bugs developed by Microsoft , or a copy , and to point to a common theme between the machine and the Site, the logical suspect is the Web Bug creating the instability in this case. Your on the right track. In some instances this does work but not all the time. I have done this before on my machine and it worked but on a customers machine it did not. Please post another answer when you have something else I can try. Thanks.

Another thing worth checking is proxy settings.
There are two things to check:
1. In IE. Check settings on Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN settings.
2. Winsock Proxy Client (WSP). Check if WSP is installed. Check if there is icon for WSP in Control Panel. If it is, remove it and reinstall it if necessary. WSP Client, when installed actually replaces winsock.dll. So if you've got bad luck, you may need to uninstall and reinstall TCP/IP protocol in Control Panel/Networking.

I would like to add a workaround that works sometimes if the issue is hitchhikers such as WebBugs , and spyware, it won't resolve the problem , rather allow going around in most cases if not an issue with a bad browser. Find a way to get to the siteto be viewed, if it takes multiple attempts or what ever , you can make links on your on machine and send them to the customer. The process is to use the Mail link to add a stable controller to the action, and allow strait connection without a snoopon the query end. But you must copy the address on the page to be viewed , place it in a mail message to yourself or to another as a clickable link. Bottom line , it appears the servers have made updates that are not nice to MS software, as to who is responcible for the fix is conjecture , as this is only part of the problem due to a softspot in the MS browser, but I would take a working browser install and try it on a non working machine and see if it's a issue with the product maker to eleminate that aspect also. Also another sent me this fix he used to resolve the viewer aspect on his particular machine (Don't do it if you are not qualified , and or, can recover if it don't fly [IE: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor\Editor Name]
@="\"C:\\Winnt\\notepad.exe\""
save as vsource.reg and double click.] Luck
