Internet Hooks

By walden ·
I've been hooked by some unscrupilous internet site and now when I connect to my Internet Explorer I am dillused with pop-up windows wanting me to download software and signup to what I believe to be X-Rated sites. I found a part of the problem in my Home page setting. If I go to IE's Tools;Internet Options;Home Page, the text in that window is greyed and I can't change it. I have upgraded my IE from rev. 5 to rev. 6 in an attempt to correct the problem but it still is there. How do I correct this ?

If someone has done all this to your machine I would seriously wonder what else your machine is doing in the background you cannot see. Also me personally, I have no love for IE6 which is also now on your machine and as far as I know cannot be removed.. I would save your important info to another drive or zip disk. Try whats typed below but be prepared, you may have to format and reload windows
The first thing you will want to do is remove any items modified on the day who ever took over your machine,. Go to start, up to find, now select files and folders,Choose the date tab and if you can remember the day it happened type in the day before and the day after, or select the next best choice of the last 3 days or whatever, Look for an .exe that was installed, write it down and search for it. You may be able to simply go to installed programs in the controll panel to find this also. After doing this try changing your start page the normal way.

I do not know how to get your Grayed out box back in IE if this did not do it but if you want to change your start page in the registry which is always risky! Go to the start button, click and choose run. In the dialog box type regedit, here is the vast unknown printed out ahead of you.
click the plus sign next to HKEY_CURRENT USER,, scroll down to software, Now the plus sign next to microsoft, scroll down to INTERNET EXPLORER, now to MAIN and highlight it. You will see your current startpage in the right hand pane. double click theicon to the left of the printed start page and another dialog box opens, type the startpage you want here exactly the way it appears.

This was way to long, but I hope it helps, Remember to be careful if you decide to go into the registry. Search and delete the exe first or it will probably just reload itself and rechange your startpage.
Good luck
Greg

This was good but I found solution elsewhere. The solution to the grayed out box was in the Registry. I was able to change it so the box was available again and change my 'home page'to what I wanted it to be.

Take a look at these URLs. It could be a virus VB script.

Unable to Change Home Page Setting in Internet Properties -
(Type the Q number in the search box at technet.microsoft.com)

Q195161

Look at the bottom of the following list. (There are no spaces in the URL)

Here?s the virus description.

I have 3 things you could try

go to add/remove programs, click on IE6,select repair, see if that works.

you could download Ad-Aware from this site & run it.

if that doesn't work try this one,it detects BHOs on your browser & lets you disable them

good luck
