internet monitoring and reporting

By mferrel ·
Need suggestions for a software to monitor where users are surfing. Should have good reporting capabilities. Also should be able to specify bandwidth priority to users. We are a small organization (<50) so money is a factor.

Using Guantlet Firewall on NT, NT Server v4 with Exchange 5.5.

internet monitoring and reporting

When I installed our network and set up Internet Access, I used a Proxy Server called GateKeeper. I use a dialup ISDN connection and let the GateKeeper Proxy Server allow multi-user access through a common connection.Since your access is already running efficiently, GateKeeper will still run daily logs of where each IP address is "surfing". You can see who has been assigned a particular IP address thru NT or GateKeeper also has a feature to determine who 1.2.3.4 is. You can choose to log WWW traffic; POP3, IMAP & SMTP (Email) traffic, SOCKS, FTP, DNS, etc etc. Any traffic occuring over the connection can be logged in any combination. The administrator box has real time reporting where you can sit and watch an IP address surf. I like calling users on their phone when I notice someone downloading a huge file named something like boomboom.mpg. The best thing about GateKeeper is that you can purchase a couple different packages. 2 years ago, the 5 concurrent user license was only $100 and I purchased with a credit card over the internet. This package may be a good start for you, then, you can go to a larger user license. GateKeeper will log the first 5 users it notices.

You can find GateKeeper here....

Thanks for the tip but I contacted Infopulse and they said "Gatekeeper does NOT give the ability to prioritize bandwidth to users". Haven't been able to find out if Proxy Server does or not yet.

I think Scott must really like Gatekeeper seeing as he replied twice.
And I have to agree with him, it really does do the job. One thing you can do with it is to view how much total time and download size a user has actually had/used and if you really want to allocate a charge to that user!
I've only been useing GK for about three weeks and I'm well impressed.

For a little more money and a lot more flexablity you can use MS Proxy Server. This will also give you the ability to use caching and minimize the bandwideth across your internet connection.

Take a look at Surf Control's superscout - does have bandwidth control - free evaluations for download.

You might even want to take the surfcontrol challenge and win a vacation. See the side bar.
