(This answer assumes you’re using windows)
This is my favorite way to do this.. it’s a round-about way, but it works and will let you print html pages with the best quality and with far more print options than the browser’s print utility.
      – Open the page in your browser
      – Go under file and choose “Save As”
(If the html page contains frames you might need to click on one frame at a time to save them, depending on the frames settings and the browser)
      – Save the page to your hard drive as an .html file
      – Now you’ll be able to open the .html file using Microsoft Word, or any other full-featured similar program. Best part is, you’ll be able to use the advanced printing options in Word or other similar programs to fit the page to one printed page, or set page size, and all the other advanced printing features.
      – For example, if you have MS Word, open Word then click on file and open, then select .html file types, then select the .html page. Then use the page setup and print preview options, and print

set your printer to landscape mode. This will turn your paper sideways and give you a few extra inches.

Another option is through the use of a 3rd party tool, such as Crystal Web (bundled with Crystal Reports). You can design a report that can either be viewed as an HTML page, or within a Java or ActiveX report viewer. Using the report viewer, you have access to the printer contexts so you can control the format of the output. It may cost a bit more initially for the product, but the time you’ll save (not to mention the headaches) will quickly be aleviated.

I’ve met with this problem quite a few times and the only reliable solution seems to be the “version for printing”. Though how it’s organized is up to you – generally the page is sliced in a few columns that thereafter are printing consequentially. I’ve used pure HTML/CSS for this (page-break-after: always for critical tags such as table), PDF generator (not so good), and numerous GIFs – my favourite.
