Internet Sharing

By wayde ·
Running NT4.0 Server SP6 Compaq 400 PII 64 MB RAM 56 KBPS dialup internet connection.
I have tried numerous internet sharing programs and they all are flawed in some way:
(1)PROXY server (trial) doesn't let the clients bring down the full page. The page parsing stops in the middle.
(2) WINGATE 3.0 trial same as proxy server.
(3) WINPROXY by Lanprojekt works alright BUT only ONE of the clients can connect to SSL servers, the others come up with the "cannot find DNS server" crap page.
(4) iSHARE well this one doesn't work at all.

Clients are win98 SE 10BaseT cards. 64 MB ram each. ALL machines run IE 5.0 - 2 hubs(CNET 16port(1) 8Port(1)) UTP.....
Anyone can offer ANY suggestions to help with this problem ?

Going back to the MS Proxy server option...

Perhaps you should check the settings on the web proxy service in the control manager. I have enabled both caching and active caching on my proxy server and set both to equal importance. There are some occasions where I have too many users and proxy cannot keep up with the requests since I am waiting for my DSL service to be activated, but on the whole, proxy keeps up with the requests pretty well. The only other consideration is the number of clients who are trying to use the dialup connection. Based on your description, it appears that you have 20 clients or so. If they are all surfing at once, the dialup connection just cannot provide the bandwidth and some of the clients may be timingout. I think you may be stretching the bandwidth potential of your connection. Good luck.

Maybe the server memory is causing the very low responses. First, try to run TASKMGR.EXE. You can check memory usage history, processes, etc. which will indicate whether or not you need more memory. At 64MB, your server is rather low on mem resources.

In the Internet sharing program you're using for trial, see if you can activate or enable caching as this may improve page browsing responses to the clients.
