    Internet Slow down

    Locked

    by yippiekaiaii ·

I have recently fallen victim of very slow download speeds from my ADSL line. Its so bad at time that it wont even download a page because it takes that long that the browser times out.

I have tried using both Internet explorer and Firefox to make sure the browser isnt causing any problems. I have run three different anti-spyware programs which are all coming up relatively clean.

I have also rang my ISP and asked them if there are any faults in the area.

Before I get an engineer out (most likely at my cost) are there any other diagnostics i can do or any other factors I can look at.

I have an 8 meg ADSL service provided by PIPEX in the UK.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

you don’t have any virus reset your router\modem by powering it Off\On – or just un-plug the power cable for 30 sec and plug it back in.
Sometimes connections are getting slow after a long period of up time and resetting helps.

Same Problem solution with one more suggestion

In my previous company I was gettig the same problem Then I used to disconnect the cable of the modem for some time and then re-plugh it after 1 or 2 minutes. Before doing this practicle I want one answer from your side.

Tell me which Operating System you are using and also whether you have latest service pack for that or no?

Have you updated your system with Windows Updates before using your Internet connection?

If every things is there what ever I mentioned above. Check out whether firewall is disabled from your system or no?

        If no then disable it.

        And after that………….
Check the packets send and receive. Sent should be more and receive should be less. If receive packet is more than send then check the cable and the connector.

rule out your network and kit…

get hold of another dsl modem and a clean laptop and try connecting with that alone – disconnecting your network and anything you have connected to it.

If that works (I bet it does!) then just put your network back together bit-by-bit and find out what’s up.

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+ Shift+Esc) and Process and see which process is taking the most CPU. Please post the result.

      Complicated

As helpful as everyone has been has any of it actually helped you? Everyone is giving really in depth complicated detailed answers as to why, i myself am on pipex as well, 4mb i think, the internet works superbly first thing in the morning and up until around about 2-3pm, and the very simple reason for this is that this is approximately the time that americans go online, and as pipex is also tiscali, suddenly there are hundreds of thousands of millions of people that are online, and for some unearthly reason, the americans connection gets priority, I found this topic by trying to figure out why my internet was slowing down, to see if anything could be done, but nothing can, id say change isp but most of them run through tiscali now or the dreaded aol…so at the end of it unfortunately there really is nothing that can be done, just dont go on at peak times…sucks i know

I struggle with this as well

I used to have a 3 meg ADSL with one provider, I now have a 5 meg ADSL with another provider. When things are going well, my new provider is noticeably faster, but when things are not so well, its much much worse.

The first thing to do is to see if your provider has a dsl test page. The advantage of this is that it eliminates the connection between your provider and the rest of the world, which is subject to load issues.

I would also try running msconfig (Run from the start menu, type msconfig) and turning off all non MS apps from startup, then rebooting, then connect to the net and run the same dsl speed test.

DSL in theory is supposed to be a constant speed, at least between you and your provider.

I did a quick google and found that many others have a negative opinion of PIPEX
