Internet using Proxy and DialUp

By jaybrdie ·
We are currently running W2k Server at five locations. I am trying to configure the laptops to be able to use the Office network for connecting to the Internet through Proxy Server 2.0. The only problem I am having is that when they want to connect to the internet at home they have to go into the Control Panel, Uncheck the WSP Client, Reboot and then run the setup wizard again to use their existing Dial-up accounts. Most of the laptop users are running Win98 and some are running W2k Pro. I've found that checking the "connect when a network connection is not found" does not work. Does anyone have any ideas on how to set up the laptop users so hey don't have to reconfigure the WSP Client whenever they switch from the network to dial-up and vice-versa?

Internet using Proxy and DialUp

Are the users of the Win2K machines logging on to their systems the same way at home as they are at work? At work I will log onto our LAN and connect through a proxy but at home I log onto the machine itself, not the LAN. This allows me to setup my internet connection differently. To do this you should see a domain name under the username and password.

One drawback to this is that the user will have a different "My Documents" folder and others may be different as well. They won't be able to access their other one unless they have permission to it. Look under "Documents and Settings" on the C: drive.

This is a simple answer but I hope it points you in the right direction.

With WSP Client you have to diable it and reboot before you can use the dial up connection. Thanks for the suggestion but I found a solution by purchasing Netswitcher which allows you to set up multiple configurations and all you have to do is select the location. Not bad for only $9

The easiest way that I have found is to have the user go into IE and either add or remove the check in the "Use a proxy server" box.
Tools/Internet Options/connections/Lan Settings.

Works great here for all of our travelling sales people. (Nowif I can only get them to remember to do it before they call me...)

Thanks but I found Netswitcher ($9) which allows me to set up multiple configurations that allows to laptop user to select the location and it reconfigures them for that location automatically.
