I think I know what you are getting at. It would depend on whether the project is for hardware or software.

One of the best approachs for writing requirments is to think about what you need to test.

For software - you need to determine whether it will work in your existing environment -

Will it work with OS(patch level etc). Are there any other software based requirements needed to be installed as well (.net framework/Java etc)?

Do we have performance requirements/benchmarks?

Can our backup software/process work with the software?

Are there interface requirements?

For new hardware:

What are the power requirements?
What are the network requirements?
Will this work on our existing servers?

Thats a start.

I'd advise for asking for some documentation samples.

I know that I have several representative examples of architecture documentation available for potential clients inspection.
