    Intranet Problem.

    I have NT 4.0 PDC with IIS4.0 installed.
    I have NT workstations and a couple Mac machines. NT wrks can see the intrant.
    Mac (8.6) can not see the intranet but when I type IP address of my PDC on IE5, it see the intranet page. When I type meridian on IE5, it goes to http://www.meridian.com automatically.
    So what I did is;
    In Control-panel from MAC, I seleted HOSTs file and it say invaild type “meridian” which is hosts header of my intranet.
    Hosts file has one line as below;
    192.168.1.2 meridian
    I can not seleted with this format so I changed the order such as;
    meridian 192.168.1.2
    then I could be able to selelte but still I can not browse.

    Any idea would be appreciated.

    Sunny,

      Go to http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n75085 for the format of the hosts file on Mac OS/Open Transport. It’s most of the way down the page.

      There seem to be two problems with your hosts file setup. First, the address must contain atleast one dot. Second, you must specify the DNS record type. While some of your question is unclear, I think you’re trying to redirect access to http://www.meridian.com (what IE5/Mac looks for if you type just “meridian” in the location) to your internal site, 192.168.1.2. Try this entry:

      http://www.meridian.com A 192.168.1.2

      Or you might want to try something like this:

      meridian CNAME intranet.meridian-corp.com A 192.168.1.2

      (that example should be all one line)

      This makes meridian an alias (CNAME) for the “real” name of the server (which I’m just guessing…replace ‘intranet.meridian-corp.com’ with the real name of that server) and then resolves it to that IP address.

      I changed HOSTS file and tried it. It did not work.

      The HOSTS file contains;
      meridian CNAME DOMAIN A 192.168.1.2

      When I import the HOSTS file from Control-panel, TCP/IP in MAC, it say not vaild name DOMAIN. MAC sees DOMAIN when I open Chooser.

      All I want to is browse my intranet from MAC. As long as NT side works fine, Intranet configuration is okay, isn’t it?

      DOMAIN is the machine name of Intranet.
      Intranet named Meridian.

      Thanks,

      Fastest solution for the MAC is to get a product called DAVE that allows you to full interact with the network like you were an NT station. This should take care of a lot of the issues. What I think is causing it is that your intranet is working off of WINS some how and the makes just aren’t receiving that information.

        I have tested my WINS server and it is running fine.

        I tried DAVE(I am not famlier DAVE), but some how it did not work. DAVE couldn’t connect to WINS.
        Any idea?
