introduction to open source

By bsbcabee ·
Greetings. I'm enrolled in computer science and wanted to gain some experience doing open source while I'm in school. Can anyone give me any advice on where to start? I'm looking for a simple project to get a basic idea of how open source works. Thanks for the advice.

Why not check out sourceforge and find a project that interests you?

If you are interested in joining the community, also check out usenet (although that is where the Linux Nazis(tm) hang out).

You might also try to join a local LUG (Linux Users Group)

If you have any questions, drop me a line.

http://freshmeat.net for an easier search for specific projects.
http://gnu.org for the core utilities for linux
http:/savannah.gnu.org for the gnu project teams.

though the last 2 are pretty hard core linux systems sites.
