Inventory Software

By GarrickP ·
I was wondering if anybody has had experience with both the Novell Zenworks Inventory solution and the Altiris Inventory solution and has reached a decision on which is the most comprehensive solution.

Tested both in my lab (for magazine reviews), so that is limited but maybe useful.
Altiris Inventory was slightly better than Novell, mainly because with Novell the relation between the NDS part and the SQL database part is a bit overcomplex and making reporting not easy. However Altiris software distribution was far worse than ZENWorks, so overall I rated ZEN clearly better. If you are solely into inventory, then Altiris might be useful (but still you would pay for a lot more functions than you're going to use...).

Have fun,

In our environment we are running Zenworks but without the extra inventory peice added on. We looked into the Zenworks inventory peice and the Altiris Inventory solution and have gone with Altiris.

The Altiris reporting seemed to be much better and more customizable. The selling point was that the reporting is all via an intranet site. This means no client to distribute and we could make a custom report site with security for each Line of Business. This way one LOB didn't have to look at the entire company.

Good luck!

Chad
