Invisible files filling up Hard disk

By tej_dyal ·
Symptom: C: drive is 0k free space. If I clear up temp files, remove unneccessary programs it fills up again to 0K free space in 5 minutes. Anaylysing the sizes of folders on C: drive I discover this perculiarity - When clicking properties of c:\winnt I get a total all file size of 23.5GB but when I go into the the winnt folder, select all, right click to properties I am given only 1.08GB. So there are 22GB files hidden somewhere despite haveing the folder settings set to "view all" - I suspect virus so I run Computer Associates Trust, I also run Stinger and FixZotob. No virus found. help would be much appriciated on this. Thanks

Do a search for files larger than 500MB or 1GB & see what shows up, choose advanced options.

Do you have backups scheduled on this PC, have a look at system restore also.

Thanks for response B Pope. I have done the search and only two files larger than 500mb are Lotus Notes Archive files which I expect. When I do a search of C drive for all files, it only returns 5gb of files (searching sub directories checked). By the way I do have View All Hidden files checked also which I forgot to mention. System is Windows 2000 Pro - there are no system restore activated. Thanks

Sorry, just to confirm: You have checked "Show hidden files and folders" AND un-checked "Hide protected operating system files"?

I only ask because many people forget that hidden SYSTEM files are not shown when you simply check "Show hidden files and folders."

Winterfrost, you are absolutely right. I did not un-check "Hide protected o/s system file". Having now done this and run a new search - I have found thousands of files with filenames in Hex stating with 800XXXXX in hundreds of sub folders named as d1,d2,d3 etc in folder c:\winnt\csc\. These are the culprit 22GB files and for the life of me I do not know how they get there, what purpose they serve and they certainly were not there before. I believe CSC folder is for synchronised files but there is only 2.2GB of files synchronised. I will investigate this further now though will close this as My main question (invisible files) is answered! Thanks

by mikael.svensson In reply to Invisible files filling u ...

Referring to a problem you had 2005 :)

Hi, got exactly the same symtpoms with 800XXXX hexa files filling a customers HDD (C:) completely. How did you get rid of this? Is it a virus or something else?

Please give me something to work on.

Big Thanks
