IP ADDRESS

By jkartheek ·
Is it possible to buy ip address of our own. Instead of getting the ip address from the ISP is it possible for us to buy a block or blocks of ip address and ask the ISP to give the internet access for these set of ip addresses. If that is possible what is the procedure that have to be followed. Can anyone guide me in this regard.

Thanks in Advance

It was, at one time, possible to "buy" IP address space. You now must get them from, and justify them to, your upstream service provider. Just as they must justify their space to their upstream provider. They should not be unreasonably witholding them from you however. For a complete dissertation on the scheme see RFC 2050 and RFC 1518 at this link http://www.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc2050.txt

Consider firewalling and using port address translation in lieu of ip address translation.
Conserves address space

Yes, and your ISP is the group to talk to. However, for several excellent reasons, it is recommended to:
1 - use a "public non-routable" addressing scheme internally (something like 10.0.0.0/
2 - use a firewall solution that uses Port-Address Translation and NAT, along with only a small set of addresses from your ISP (you need some because you might need to build tunnels into your email server, etc.)
