Ip address conflict

By jhender31 ·
I have two computers with an ip address conflict. I know how to resolve the issue, but what i want to know is. How can i find the other machine using the address? I do not want it using it because it is in a certain range and should never have been assigned to anything. It could be a win98 or 2000 machine. Maybe even a printer, but I doubt it. Can i find out who has this address, maybe by username or machine name? I have not gotten a response from anybody getting a duplicate ip message, which i think i should have.

thanks

If its a windows based machine use nbtstat -A <ip> and pull its netbios table information. This should show you the computers current domain name, machine name, and username if someone is logged onto it.

Another trick is if you run a WINS server, to check the WINS database. That can give you the machine name of the machine with the IP. It might be the name of the other machine. You would then know what machine it is.
Another way is if the machine you do know of that is conflicting is NT/2000/XP, to check the Event Viewer logs. There would be a record of the IP address conflict in the Application log, and it will list the machine name of the other machine.

hope this helps

just unplug the machine you are on that reported the error, then ping the ip address with the -a flag - this will resolve the ip address to its netbios name.
