IP Address Conflict - Power Scheme in XP

By sevens1965 ·
Our clients are having problems with IP address conflicts. On our XP SP2 workstations, our power scheme powers down the workstation after 5 hours but the NIC doesn't sleep as it searches for Wake on Lan packets that are addressed only to the NIC's MAC address and not its IP adress. Some of the clients travel and are away for weeks at a time. The computers do not release their its IP adress when in Standby mode and therefore their IP address is maintained in the cache. Very often the system is in standby mode longer than the lease period. When the client returns and logs on, they get a conflicting IP address error and an administator must log on and perform a IPCONFIG /release.

To summarize, this is a power scheme and DHCP issue caused by a system in standby that has passed its DHCP lease once in standby mode. Powering the system down is not an option as we depend on SMS to update the computers.

Has anyone encountered this and have you seen a solution. I did see one forum where the poster suggested using WINS to find the conflicting computer (with the same IP address) but that is not a viable option.

Thanks in advance
