IP Configuration Error

By KyBullitt ·
I have a PC on the network I can't get IP to work properly on. The protocol installs correctly and I can assign the correct static IP address. I am using the Novell Netware Client 3.1 and have IPX also loaded. The notebook connects to the network properly with IPX and lets me sign-on to my Novell server. The problem is that it will not ping/connect to anything else on the network. When I go to the MS-DOS prompt and run the ipconfig command I receive "IP ConfigurationFatal Error" and "Cannot read IP Configuration" error. It has an IBM Auto Token-Ring Credit Card Adapter in the notebook. It's running Windows 98 SE. I've also tried deleting eveything in the Network section of Control Panel and reinstalled. The PC worked at one time including IP. Help with any ideas as to why the system cannot read the IP configuration and how to fix it.

IP Configuration Error

You failed to mention info/data on the server side. I am not sure but I believe there is a patch/module/nlm that you load on the server (4.x or 5.x) to run DHCP. Or alternatively, have a separate NT server on your net and configure it a WINS/DHCP server.

As I read on your problem statement, it seems that NW clients (latest version now is 3.3 for WIN9x) logon to the server using the IPX protocol and hence, client PCs do not necessarily need IP protocol/settings; only network number.

Hope this gives you more ideas!

Appreciate looking at problem. I only mention the Netware Client and its working to demonstrate the machine is correctly connected to the network. I use STATIC IP so I won't need a DHCP server. I must use the IP protocol for our Groupwise server - it only uses IP to communicate. The question is what would cause the IP error "Cannot read IP configuration" when IP seems to be properly configured?

Have no fear computer_guy. Sounds like you have a problem with the winsock client. Do a find on your machine for a folder called "ws2bkup". Within this folder is a batch file called "ws2bkup.bat". If you run this batch file it will revert your current winsock client back to the last version before update. After that you can down load the winsock 2.0 update from microsoft and install it. I hope that this will help you.

As an appendage I'll add, run "ws2bkup.bat" from dos. Restart in dos mode, if you run this from windows you will receive sharing violation errors and the batch file will not be able to affect files it needs to.

You're right on the money! I found this answer myself yesterday on MS Technet (Article Q191064). I couldn't find the answer the first time I checked there, but took more time and found it. I left the question open to see how long it would take for someone to find the answer. Thanks.
