IP conflict

by skat . Updated 22 years, 10 months ago

In a two computer network (nic in each) connected to a 3Com Gateway to share internet and printing, the IP settings in the host are: Host 192.168.2.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0, default Gateway 192.168.2.1. Client 192.168.2.3, subnet and Gateway same as Host, both computers boot up with an IP address conflict warning.

LAN properties, status shows Connected. From Client, I can ping to all three IP addresses. From Host I cannot ping to these three addresses. In TCP/IP properties, Client for MS Networks, File and printer sharing for MS Networks and TCP/IP are all checked.

I know very little about networking. Above setup was working fine for over a year until new drive and Win 2000 upgrade to SP4. Since then, LAN is inoperative. I need a step-by-step troubleshooting process but have been unsuccessful in getting this kind of help. I’m a newbie at networking even at this simple level.
