IP not being passed to Application

By rick.fisher ·
I have a Win98se notebook that is not passing the IP address it receives to the applications. This includes IE and Eudora (E-mail). I can dial to my ISP and get an IP address (WINIPCFG). I can also connect it to a network and get an IP but can not browse or IE. I can open a command window and ping however.

Very confusing??????? Help!

Rick

Sounds like a DNS issue. Please confirm with your ISP what (if any) dns entries need to be made. More than likely the IP addy is fine. If DNS isn't the issue and your settings are correct then you may have accidentally enabled the proxy settings in IE (this would also effect Eudora). Disable the proxy if this is the case.

I did try these suggestions but I still can not pass IP traffic. Thanks for the response however. I'm about ready to reinstall Win98se.

After connecting to the ISP , go the command prompt & type 'ping yahoo.com'
If its able to resolve ur address to IP number then ur DNS settings is OK with ISP .Only the proxy settings has to be disabled in the IE & Set default to the current dialup Connection.
Eudora takes IE settings , so nothing has to be changed there eventually.
Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Kias

I tried "burning" in the DNS entries but even then I would not ping by name. The proxy settings were not set either. I'm about ready to reinstall - very strange this IP issue. Thanks for responding.

I have had a similar problem with my desktop running 98Se. I ended up calling microsoft in the end and it was a problem in the registry. There was a file there that when removed, rebuilt itself after rebooting. I cannot remember the exact strand where it was located though. I recommend if you go playing with the registry make a backup of your current one. The registry is very picky. I will try to find the location of the file and let you know of any results.

I bit the bullet and rebuild the server. What a pain. Next time I'll call MS and get some help too.
