IRQ Conflict/Sharing: See a problem?

By kimba1031 ·
When looking at my system resources hardware conflicts/sharing I see the following:

IRQ 5 CMD USB Open Host Controller
IRQ 5 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 9 VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ 9 VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ 9 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 10 Creative Sound Blaster PCI128
IRQ 10 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 11 CNET PRO200 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
IRQ 11 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
IRQ 14 VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
IRQ 15 VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller

Does this look like it could be a problem? I am experiencing freezes, and system resource drops(sometimes down as low as 4%). I am running Win98, 256MBRAM lots of free space, Nothing extra in startup, and get quicker resource drops when running MSAccess. Looking to gain understanding on possible reasons for these issues. Any suggestions?

The only issue that I see in your list is the double listing for IRQ9 and the VIA 3038 PCI to USB controller.

Do you have multiple USB controllers?
In the standard view, do you have more than 1 USB controller showing?

Beyond that, the rest looks pretty normal.
If you move to XP, it will place almost everything on 1 IRQ!

My first thought for your system freezes would be how long since you wiped the drive and re-installed W98?

Over time, Windows builds up registry bloat and unneededsystem files.
The interval varies from 6 months - 2 years. But it is recommended to wipe the drive periodically and start over from scratch.

Make sure that you are not running with a limited size swap file. For large programs with large files, (such as Access) you need the entire drive available for virtual memory.

I would agree with the first answer but add this comment: Before wasting tons of time reinstalling win98 and all associated programs...try using the utility called regfixer in the Ontrack fix it utilities 2000 package first. If you run that specificutility as many times as it takes for it to reply with "no problems found in your registry" you will find a substantial amount of registry bloat has been removed.

I personally have disabled plug-n-pray within my bios/cmos and have forced everything to it's own IRQ. This is certainly a pain in the *** but is well worth it in my case. Best of luck!

What do you mean in "standard view", do I have more than 1 USB controller showing? In my device manager, I see 3 USB Root Hub, 2 VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controllers, 1 unknown(scanner-am currently fixing the driver issue), and 1 CMD USB Open Host - should I Remove any of those? I only have 2 USB ports. One for my camera, the other for my scanner, and I thought I had another for my printer but my printer is not plugged in anywhere.
I have had the pc for approx. 8 mos, where do I go to check if I am running with a limited size swap file? entire drive? I have 13.9G divided into two partitions, couldn't I just move the .mdb files(and others) through my directory and uninstall/reinstall MSOffice back after wiping C: clean? Isthat where the swap file size comes in...?
Or should I continue to troubleshoot my driver issue/lock up freeze issues? I am seriously thinking it is my cheesy DLink, PhotoSuiteIII, SE, MiraScan software..maybe not compatible with AOpen components in the PC(Video Card)?? Even if I wipe clean and reinstall, if it is the software, it will happen again...right? Then, how will I be sure it is/or is not the software? In the meantime, I will dig on the software website for some answers, but if you could please answer the above questions, I would greatly appreciate it. It would help me greatly. Thanks :,)

Where is this utility called regfixer in the Ontrack fix it utilities 2000 package that you are referring to in your suggestion?
