Irregular Monitor Flicker

By homepres ·
A 4 year old NEC- MultiSync C500 Monitor has for some months been giving a sharp/brittle click foolowed by a severe flick that *shakes* the image up and down. This does not have a set pattern nor does it tie in with any specific activity that the PCmay be doing. The OS is W98se.
The Monitor has never had the case removed or been fiddled with and all leads appear OK with secure connections.
Thank you in advance for any clues - Errol

Irregular Monitor Flicker

by Richard Lane In reply to Irregular Monitor Flicker

This is the monitor running a process called 'de-Gaussing', which, if I understand it correctly, basically repolarises the x & y plates within the tube of the monitor, clearing out any junk static on the plates and resulting in a clearer, sharper image again. If it is doing it very frequently, this may be an indication that the monitor is on its way out and needs either an overhaul, or replacing (which would probably be cheaper in the long run).

Richards explaination appears to be the most likely reason for this happening (except the process of degaussing actually equalises the magnetic field, which removes discolouration caused my magnetic inteference, such as a nearby speaker) This should only happen when the monitor is first switched on, or when the degauss button is pressed, but a dry solder joint in the degauss cuircit could also cause this (cheap). It could also be a couple of other things that immediately spring to mind, such as the CRT 'flashing over' (expensive, probably cheaper to buy a new monitor) or a faulty flyback transformer causing the G2 voltage to surge (essentially turning the brightness full on, causing the safty cuitcits to switch the monitor off and degauss when it comes back on [equally expensive])

In my opinion it is a hardware fault, so my suggestion would be to take it to your local tv repairman for a quick once over. If it's not dry joints, then you could put up with it, but the monitor will die sooner or later

I know you probably didn't want to hear there would be a cost involved, but unfortunatly, it kinda looks like there will be

Hope that all makes sense
