Is AI Now a Skill Requirement or Just Another Buzzword on IT Resumes?

    by emilyclarkford ·

    Hey everyone,

I’ve noticed more job listings lately (even for standard IT roles like sysadmin or support tech) mentioning “AI experience” or “machine learning exposure” as desirable skills. But in most cases, the job itself has nothing to do with AI.

Is this just buzzword fluff — or is basic AI knowledge now a legit expectation for IT professionals?

I’ve seen people list tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, and even AI-based ticketing systems on their resumes. Personally, I’ve used Google’s AI integrations in Workspace and some scripting tools, but I wouldn’t call myself an AI expert.

    So my questions are:

Are hiring managers actually prioritizing AI tool familiarity now?

If you’ve used AI to speed up documentation, generate scripts, or troubleshoot config issues, has it helped in interviews?

Or is it still more of a “nice to have” that looks good on paper but doesn’t matter much in practice?

Curious to hear from anyone hiring or actively job hunting — especially in enterprise or MSP environments.

I believe that AI has been evolving and becoming more of a part of many systems/processes and will continue to do so. More companies are having to integrate it into their systems to simplify many customer service types of activities. I think it should become more of a requirement for many folks to learn about the technology to keep up with newer developments.

A lot of job listings are throwing around “AI experience”

Great question — I’ve noticed the same trend. A lot of job listings are throwing around “AI experience” even when the actual role has nothing to do with building or training models.

From what I’ve seen (and heard from recruiters), it’s less about being an AI expert and more about comfort with AI tools. Knowing how to use ChatGPT, Copilot, or AI-based automation for documentation, ticketing, or scripting is becoming a practical skill — especially in enterprise or MSP settings where productivity matters.

It’s still mostly a “nice to have,” but it can give you an edge, especially if you can speak to real-world use cases (like saving time, improving documentation, or reducing errors). In interviews, even casually mentioning how AI has sped up your workflow shows adaptability — and that’s what hiring managers are really looking for.

      See what happens!
When there is a trend or technological revolution, both the employer and employee will play their tapes in such a way that they will feel among even if they aren’t among.
When the knowledge of computer was needed years ago, you will read things as “Knowledge of computer is an added advantage”. Even when the job isnt related.

What happens is that the company is showing that they are not repulsive to the emerging technology, so they are open to growth.

I’ve noticed the same trend. From what I’ve seen, basic AI tool familiarity (like ChatGPT or Copilot) is becoming a “nice to have” rather than a hard requirement, especially in enterprise and MSP roles. It shows you’re adaptable and resourceful, which definitely helps in interviews, even if the job isn’t AI-focused.
