Is Filemaker Pro better than Excel?

By coach777b ·
I have a client who has an existing Excel database which is not relational. I need to convince them that relational database will be more productive.

spreadsheet vs. database

This is a debate that has been going on for a long time. The software manufacturers have been adding "features" that allow users to mis-use all kinds of tools. Your best approach is to start with definitions of a) spreadsheet and b) relational database; show the kinds of data to be stored; identify input, output, sharing, etc.; and make lists of "pro" vs. "con". For some instances, the spreadsheet that someone knows how to navigate will actually be "better" for them than the database that might be a technically better tool. Without knowing more details, this is a little like asking which end of the screwdriver is better suited to drive nails - so you can hang up that latest calendar!
