    Is it malware?

    Locked

    by sanjivn ·

For some time now, whenever I’m using my desktop the pages scroll up and down frequently and randomly without me moving the mouse or scrooling. The physical appearance of the screen is ok, it isn’t blurred nor is there a problem with the pixels. This problem occurs when browsing the internet, especially when I have more than 1 windows open or multiple tabs, it even occurs in Microsoft Office.
I think it is greyware because it doesn’t damage anything but is meant to be annoying. I have done a full pc virus scan with ESET Nod32 Antivirus 4.2, that was unsuccessful. Kindy reply with any suggestions.

Try swapping the keyboard and mouse

I have seen similar issues when there’s a sticky key or the roller on the the mouse is faulty. If they’re cordless you can also try swapping the batteries, again I’ve seen some funny stuff happen when they start dying – well before any indicators show they’re dying.

      try flushing the memory

in addition to the above suggestion, you might want to use a memory defragger to flush out superfluous data from the ram, resulting with more processing power and stability for the mouse.

      i use this:

      http://www.amsn.ro/index.php?action=2

my suggestion is to use it once or twice a day by manually launching it, flush the mem, then exit it.

From my opinion, I believe you should try cleaning your mouse and keyboard. Be sure to use a lint-free soft cloth (moist not wet) it may be something that is stuck like a sticky substance or just a jam. Also try defrag. if your virus scans were unsuccessful it may not be virus related

      Not sounding like malware

I think the two dirty keyboard/mouse people are on the right track. Are you on a laptop? A touchy trac pad might be the culprit. Especially if you have one with scroll built in on the side of the pad. Do you have a “fancy” mouse with multiple buttons rather than just three? I am forever zooming my mothers screen because she has a side button on her mouse set for zoom. It freaked her out the first time she used it, but now likes it.

if you use an optical mouse, like most do today, you

may want to turn the mouse over and look in the little space reserved for the light transmitter. Look for a piece of hair or some other foreign object. I once had this behaviour because a hair had caught in there and its movement activated the sensors as gravity pulled it back down after my moving it caused it to ride back up into the hole.

It’s an old desktop system that I didn’t bother to upgrade or throw away since it performed all the necessary functions and because I also have a laptop. It has a 2.21 Ghz Sempron, 1BG RAM, 30 GB hard disk drive, and the mouse and keyboard are ps2.
Thaks for the advice by the way, but switching the mouse and keyboard wouldn’t work and I’m not too sure about flushing the memory, wouldn’t that have negative effects after a while?

Why would switching the Mouse not work?

Also did you look at the actual Mouse and see if there is any crud under the Optical Sensor?

Mice do fail and they do some funny things when they do. PS2 Mice are still freely available and there are also Adapters from USB to PS2 for USB Mice.
