    Hey guys,

Is it possible to load a hi-speed USB driver on a gateway laptop? It is a SOLO 5350 with XP. I want to attach a DVD burner, but the speeds on the USB are not compatible with each other. The device requires a hi-speed USB connection. The USB drivers on the Laptop are also standard does that mean I can get them on the system discs that came with the Laptop?

    Help guys

If the NB has USB ! ports you can use a USB 2 PCMCIA card to get USB 2 Ports on the NB. You can not update the drivers from USB 1 to USB 2 as these are hardware not software related things.

From past experience though I’ve yet to find a USB 2 device that will not work on a USB 1 port and although a bit slower in the case of a DVD Burner just make sure that you have enabled the Buffer under-run protection and the software will take care of the rest of the procedure.

You shouldn’t have any real problems using a USB 2 device on USB 1 ports unless there is some special program involved that requires the higher speed data transfer port and then you use a USB 2 PCMCIA card in the NB.

Lets know if you need any more info.

If the laptop doesn’t have the high speed hardware it won’t do you any good.

You can add a pcmcia to usb 2.0 card and use the dvd external.
