Is it possible to power up and operate a laptop without the battery.

(Model Toshiba M35X-S111) Power cord is plugged in. The green light on the front just flashes intermittently with battery in or out. Screen doesn’t light up, nor does power button illuminate. Could a defective battery be the problem.
