Locked

Is it the processor or the hard drive?

By ereis ·
My machine has been locking up very frequently? I think it is hardware. It has locked up when the screen saver has come on and will not let me work with it again. It has locked up on reboot on the first blue scree, while checking the hard disk onthe first blue screen, while downloading SP6a and while trying to install it. The only way to fix the problem is to unplug the box, the power won't even reset. I have changed out the memory and the same problems. HELP.

How about a little more information.... Your running WinNT [ you mentioned SP6a] ok. Is your system IDE SCSI. Pentium 1,2,3 etc. Your mother board is made by Intel, Dell, Compaq, Asus..etc. Most important.. What do the Blue screens say... are The Port error VxD error , Driver error. This will help in torubleshooting. It sound like you might have hardware that is NOT on the HAL. If you have another system try putting the hard drive into that system and see if it exibits the same problem. Try booting from an nt bootdisk and see if the problem come up [ on your system with the problem.]. I hope this helps I'll check back to see how your making out.

If you have the time and resources, I would swap out the processor and or HD and re-install. If not, then I would do a parallel install of NT on that partition and see if that runs fine. If it runs fine, then you know you'll need to re-install NT on the original install or run an rdisk. TJ

The system is custom built. ABIT BP6 mother board, Intel Celeron 400mHz PPGA, Maxtor ATA 66 hard drive, WinNT server 4.0. I am not recieving any error messages when it hangs. That is why I think it is hardware related.

I would do some diagonostics / monitoring on the NT machine using NT Performance Monitor in Administrative tools. Check whatever hardware you suspect may be the problem. I'd monitor the harddrive, processor, and memory.

2)if still the same problem, check if the cpu
fan is still working.
3)if it still persists then it is a motherboard problem

With no clues and for only 50 points I would replace the HD. Almost always the culprit and faster to get than a processor, USUALLY.

G-day
